East Melbourne Library

This library is calm and quiet, nestled in and behind a residential area the regular patrons come in for a comfy read. East Melbourne Library has a similar offer to the rest of CoM libraries with public computers and free wifi, not just for members but temporary passes for anyone that needs it. East is also home to part of the local history service, and has thousands of photographs and public records available. The real magic is in the outside herb garden, perfect place to chill in summer, smells like mint. Have fun!

Just some of the nicest people in general work here. Somehow I left money in a book (because it was the closest thing I had to a bookmark and I'm embarrassed). They called me, verified the book and return date, put the money in the safe and remembered me the next time I was in to return the money in full. 😘

Great library with many spaces to occupy for privacy or for meetings. There's also an outdoor area out the back where it's lovely to sit and read or work in the sunshine. Meeting room available upstairs. Toilets upstairs. Elevator and stair access to upstairs. Approx 8 computers you can book to use. Printer available. Reading options are vast as this is part of City of Melbourne library so you can borrow from the catalogues of East Melbourne, City of Melbourne, Docklands, Kathleen Syme in Carlton, North Melbourne and Southbank libraries and pick up at any of those. Plenty of online options for borrowing too. Also there are plenty of DVD's, CD's, newspapers, magazines to borrow. The 'Hot Picks' section in each library is great - you can get some popular latest release DVD's and books for a one week hire rather than waiting to reserve them. Love this library and have been using it for 26 years. Free Wifi here too. Staff are always friendly, clearly knowledgeable and very helpful if needed.

I’m not much of a book reader so I visit libraries mainly looking for a place to sit next to a plugger and work on my assignments because I always look for new places to do it. This is my first time to visit East Melbourne Library and compared to other libraries, this one feels ‘homey’ since it is located in the middle of a calm neighborhood. There are common area, kids area and computers downstairs. With a room upstairs with a fair amount of plugs. Outside they have some tables under the shade. Elevators, toilets and waterfountain! They have a few parking spaces in the back and a place to park your bicycles. Overall, I’m definitely visiting again soon!

One of the best libraries to attend and do other things than read. Downstairs you have the normal library set up with lounges and tables at the front to rest read and study. There's also a really useful printer scanner available.

Upstairs you have a noisier area where there are rows of longer tables. Great for groups. There's a cold water fountain, a little kitchenette with boiling water which doesn't really seem to be entirely for the public but I've seen people use it without consequence or reservations. Basically, if you've got the need I'm sure it's fine, just don't be too brazen.

Toilets up here and lots of wall sockets for recharging.

At the back there are even outdoor cafe style tables and chairs. It's amazing.
